Another positive week for the Australian wool market with sales in both Sydney and Melbourne. The EMI with rose 50 cents to 1,393 c/kg clean, the fourth consecutive weekly price gain. Tuesday’s sale began with an early jump in prices which built further during the day. Price gains on Wednesday were more subdued in comparison. All sectors contributed to the result, with high clearance rates. The national offering was just 36,288 bales, down 2,302 bales, and the national pass in rate was 4.1%, down 3.4%. All three centres will be in operation next week, with 45,341 bales currently on offer. Sales will take place on Wednesday and Thursday due to the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in the eastern states. • A large selection of fine (<20 µm) wool was on offer in Sydney on Tuesday. The finer end of the range (<17.5 µm) was keenly sought with prices up to 70 cents dearer. Further price gains occurred on Wednesday with solid demand for all types and descriptions. Well measured, fine (<17.0 µm) Merino skirtings with low VM (<2.5%) continue to be keenly sought jumping 90 cents for the week. Broader types gained up to 60 cents. The crossbred sector rose 15-20 cents on Tuesday. Well-prepared lots carrying low VM (<1.5%) pushed prices up by a further 20 cents on Wednesday. A positive week for oddments with price rises on both sale days. VM levels dictated price on Tuesday as low (<3%) VM locks gained up to 40 cents. The Northern Regional Indicator jumped 57 cents to 1,487 c/kg clean and the Northern Merino Carding Indicator rose 29 cents to 954 c/kg clean. The Sydney pass in rate was 3.6% with 635 bales withdrawn. •
